WRITING 2 - 001151

Course Objectives

On completion of the course, students should be able to:

Knowledge:
- understand the structure of an academic paragraph, the relationship between paragraphs and short essays

-understand and distinguish popular genres: descriptive essays, narrative essays, comparative and contrast essays, opinion essays, cause and effect essays.

Career oriented skills:
-apply knowledge learned to write paragraphs and short essays of diverse genres

-apply knowledge and writing skills in life and future profession

Requirements for critical thinking:
-evaluate their own writing products and those of others

-develop self-study skills to equip themselves with linguistics, vocabulary and essay writing techniques

Attitudes:
-understand the importance of English writing in English linguistic major, life, and future profession

-Be interested in the course and confident about knowledge and skills attained in this course

Course Assessment

Assessment 1: 10% Paragraph writing

Assessment 2: 20%

Attendance (2 pts.)

1 absence/tardiness: - 0.7/0.3 pt.;

2 absences/tardinesses: - 1.3/0.7 pt.;

3 absences/tardinesses: - 2/1pt(s).

4 or more absences: ineligible for the final exam

Assignment : essay writing (8 pts.)

Assessment 3: 20%

Mid-term test: Paragraph writing

Assessment 4: 50% Essay writing



Eligibility for the final exam

Students are required (1) to attend at least 80% of the classes, (2) to get access to the course e-learning system and complete at least 6 E-learning quizzes/ assignments, the average score of which must be 5 or above up to Week 13 of the course, (3) to actively participate in class activities and discussions, (4) to read the assigned materials before every class meeting, and (5) to complete all assignments on time.

Failure to comply with the requirements will mean ineligibility to sit for the final examination.
