We are asked to confront “social problems” every day: those issues, situations, behaviors and ideas, which are perceived and labeled as problematic and for which a solution is seen as possible and necessary. In this class, we will be learning about some of these social problems. But we will also be learning about what constitutes a social problem. Who, for example, defines what a social problem is? Why do some social problems receive so much attention, while others are ignored? And what are the impacts of defining social problems in a particular way? We will examine these questions drawing on case studies of contemporary issues, like income inequality, inequality, health care, and climate change.

•The method of thematic analysis and steps to practice;
•A series of lectures and group exercises on thematic analysis.
Dear students,
Welcome to the course of Graduate Research Seminar!
We will have three classes next week. I believe you already have a schedule of our course.
I have attached reading materials, a list of students and topics for group presentation together with this email. In addition to these readings, I hope you will find more readings from other sources.
There are 19 students with 6 topics. This means that 3 students will present one topic. Only one group has 4 members. Please make sure all topics should be covered. Please prepare well your group presentation as it will be accounted for a major proportion of your mid-term result. Each group will present your topic next week.
For the final exam, you need to write your own paper and present it to the class in the week after next week. After receiving comments from the lecturer and your classmates, you will perfect it and submit it to the lecturer. Foreign students submit and present your paper in English while Vietnamese students can write and present in Vietnamese (but are encouraged to write and present in English).
Mr Mai Nguyen Duc Quang, email: 186009141@student.tdtu.edu.vn; please help me to organize groups and inform me the student list of each group and their topic as early as possible.
Best,
Anh
